Catherine joined the SMMI team at the beginning of 2016. Having previously worked at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton for several years, she is well acquainted with the marine science and engineering community, both in Southampton and further afield. Catherine holds a degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Oxford, an MSc in Oceanography from the University of Southampton, and a further postgraduate qualification in Science Communication. Throughout her career, she has gained extensive experience researching and writing about marine science and engineering, as well as environmental policy and socio-economic impact.

As Editor-in-Residence, Catherine leads on communications for the SMMI, supporting its vision to become the world’s leading institute for marine and maritime research, innovation and education. In consultation with SMMI members and partners, Catherine writes, commissions and edits articles for dissemination to our stakeholders through a variety of channels – with a focus on the work, the impact and the people. She also contributes to other communications activities, such as outreach, social media campaigns and promoting SMMI both nationally and internationally.

Catherine’s normal working days are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
