I am an Assistant Professor at the Agents Interaction and Complexity Group (AIC), Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. I am doing research in fault-tolerant robotic systems that use bio-inspired algorithms and machine learning techniques to rapidly detect faults and adapt to a priori unknown environmental changes. My interests also lie in using robots as a physical embodied platform to validate the principles underlying complex biological systems.

I have been a recipient of the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship (2015-2017), and part of my research is featured on the front cover of Nature.

Research interests

My research interests lie at the intersection of biology, computer science, and robotics. Through the development and application of theoretical models, multi-scale stochastic simulations, and the physical instantiation of biological models in robots, I have addressed a diverse range of important problems in division of labour in social insect societies (e.g., ants) and the immunological maintenance of self-tolerance in the adaptive immune system. I have also successfully applied biological models towards the development of fault-tolerant systems for a wide range of robot platforms, including complex single-robot systems (e.g. multi-legged robots), and large-scale robot swarms.
