Professor of Maritime and Commercial Law

Professor Francis Rose is Professor of Maritime and Commercial Law within Southampton Law School at the University of Southampton.

Francis Rose has taught at the Universities of Liverpool and Wales (at Cardiff) and University College London and was University Lecturer in Law and a Fellow of St John's College, Cambridge, then a Professor at the Universities of Buckingham, Bristol (where he was Director of the Norton Rose Centre of Commercial Law) and Southampton.

He has been a Visiting Professor at inter alia UCL, the University of Natal, the UN/IMO International Maritime Law Institute, Malta, the Universities of Auckland and Queensland, and Tulane University; is an associate of Quadrant Chambers; and was recently Robert S Campbell Visiting Fellow (in Commercial Law) at Magdalen College, Oxford. He was the inaugural Sections Secretary of the Society of Public Teachers of Law and was the founder and Convener (for 25 years) of the Society of Legal Scholars Restitution Section.

He is General Editor of Lloyd's Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly and the International Maritime and Commercial Law Yearbook. He also edits the Restitution Law Review and was Editor-in-Chief of the Company, Financial and Insolvency Law Review (now the Journal of Corporate Law Studies), both of which journals he founded. He was also Editorial Director of the Mansfield Press series of books on the Law of Restitution.

He is the author of a number of major works in the area of Maritime Law: The Modern Law of Pilotage (1983); Kennedy and Rose: The Law of Salvage (8th edn, 2013); General Average: Law and Practice (2nd edn, 2005); and Marine Insurance: Law and Practice (2nd edn, 2012, the first edition of which won the British Insurance Law Association book prize).

These books lead to the award of the higher degrees of LL.D. from Cambridge and D.C.L. from Oxford, providing, uniquely, doctorates in Law from all three of the Universities of Cambridge, London and Oxford. They have also fed into current work on a new book on Admiralty Claims. In due course, all of these books will be complemented by coverage of Carriage of Goods by Sea (to begin with the eponymous chapter in the encyclopaedic English Private Law) and then remaining topics, with a view eventually to bringing the whole work together into a definitive exposition of the principles and rules of Maritime Law.
