Research interests
Gary’s research projects focus on Secure System Engineering. His research projects develop systems that enable people to find the relevant information in order to complete their task efficiently.
The technology research areas are security, Big Data, knowledge management, cloud computing and games (including gamification). Gary works across disciplines with colleagues from industry and academia (medicine, psychology, health sciences, sociology and education).
For security he has investigated, how to conduct effective security threat analysis for SMEs, Data integration systems, document security, protocols for incidence reporting, cloud storage security and IoT security.
In education past projects have included assessment systems, serious games and the use of mobile technology for learning and teaching. Related to ICT4D, the effectiveness of elearning.
In Health projects involving Gamification and Virtual Research Environments (VREs). VREs enable collaboration, discussion and dissemination of results from clinical trials, especially those with large datasets. Investigating suitable methods for researchers in these fields to own and develop the information space. He is also investigating the use of gamification to aid adherence to treatments in diabetes, and to help young people transition to adult care. His research has also covered the data quality assurance of health records.
For Industry his research in secure systems: supports engineers to view federate knowledge, using semantic web (knowledge technologies and ontologies) to present appropriate information to the engineers. These involve Big Data (especially when the information come from the Internet of things), security in cloud computing and security in 3D printing.
For ICT4D Gary is working with partners in the UK and in less economically developed countries to bridge the digital divide, as an enabler for community change. This is a partnership between Communities, Government, Industry and Academia. Gary works closely with work with RLabs.
