Dr. Grahaeme Henderson OBE

Dr Grahaeme Henderson OBE has a 40-year career in Shell that includes working 24 years overseas on international assignments in Brunei (twice), Nigeria, Syria and The Netherlands (three times). His roles at both global and country level, have been in some of Shell’s largest, most challenging and impactful businesses.
Grahaeme is an alumnus of Southampton University with a First Class Honours BSc Degree and a PhD in numerical modelling of sea waves, an Honorary DSc and is a Professional Chartered Engineer. In 2020, he was awarded the OBE by Her Majesty The Queen for Services to International Shipping.
Grahaeme is a thought leader and spokesperson in the shipping industry with keynote addresses at many major International Conferences. Presented the Distinguished Lecture in 2015 at Southampton University entitled “The Shipping Challenge; Carry More and Emit Less”. Number 14 in the 2020 Lloyd’s List Top 100 People in Global Shipping. Winner of multiple Global Awards and in 2018, received the Safety at Sea Lifetime Achievement Award for his industry leading work on safety.
President of the UK Chamber of Shipping from 2016 to 2018 and Chair of the Oil Companies International Marine Forum from 2014 to 2018. He was a member of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council for the Oceans.
He was instrumental in establishing the Southampton University Centre for Maritime Futures, in partnership with Shell, with an ambition to transform the energy shipping industry to be safer, cleaner and more efficient through ground-breaking digital and technological advances.
Grahaeme is currently the Chairman of ‘Together in Safety’, a unique group to improve the safety performance of the global shipping industry involving all of the shipping industry bodies, major ship owners, Classification Societies, the UK P&I Club and Country Representatives.
Previously since 2011, Senior Vice-President responsible for Shell’s international shipping and maritime activities, including over 2000 floating assets with ships, barges, drilling units, floating production facilities, offshore support vessels, and related operations.
From 2005 to 2011, CEO of Brunei Shell Petroleum, one of the largest private oil and gas companies in south-east Asia and appointed by His Majesty The Sultan of Brunei as a Board member of the prestigious Brunei Economic Development Board.
In his career with Shell, Grahaeme was also the Upstream Chief Information Officer located in The Netherlands, Engineering Manager of Al Furat Petroleum, a Shell JV with the Syrian Petroleum Company in Damascus, Syria, and Chief Engineer Shell Petroleum Development Nigeria located in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.
