Dr Simon Gerrard is Industry Liasion Manager within Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton.

I arrived at the University of Southampton in March 2014 having relocated to the south coast from East Anglia. My career to date has been spent largely at the University of East Anglia where I was a member of faculty in the School of Environmental Sciences from 1988-1999. My research focused on environmental risk management. In 1999 I became the School’s first Business Innovation Manager responsible for creating an outreach and commercialisation platform. In 2002 I established the Community Carbon Reduction (CRed) programme, the first of its kind in the UK. Through a few steps, this led to the creation of a university spin-out carbon management consultancy which, amongst other things, ran low carbon investment funds. I was the company’s Chief Technical Officer, responsible for developing and managing a small team of consultants. In the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute my primary role is to develop and enhance SMMI’s global distinctiveness. The principle method of achieving this is through stimulating greater levels of multi- and inter-disciplinary research between academics and external organisations so enhancing our current peaks of excellence. This achieves the Institute’s goals to create connections and outcomes that wouldn’t normally have occurred.
