As a mechanical engineering consultant Simon works on projects for industrial clients, the majority of which focus on bespoke structural and material testing.

Simon is a Professorial Fellow (Enterprise) and leads a consultancy team, the Research Institute for Industry (RIfI), within the School of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

Simon has more than 20 years of structural integrity experience with a technical focus to solve problems involving materials and structures, through the industrial application of full-field imaging techniques for experimental stress analysis and non-destructive testing.

Since joining RIfI in 2003 Simon has worked on more than 175 consultancy projects, including a number of projects outside his own specific area of expertise, where his skills as both an experimentalist and a professional engineer have been utilised. The majority of work is funded directly from industry, although Simon has also attracted funding from UK Government and EU sources. Simon is an experienced bid and project manager and supported many consultancy and research projects in this capacity. Simon has published more than 100 scientific papers in the field of experimental mechanics.

Simon is also the Industrial Liaison Manager for the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI), with the objectives to diversify the University’s research funding and enhance its global distinctiveness in marine and maritime activity. The principal method of achieving these aims is by stimulating greater levels of multi- and inter-disciplinary research between academics, researchers, business, government and other organisations. Simon is a co-chair of the South Coast Marine Cluster, which compromises South Coast Universities, Research Organisations, Local Authorities and LEPs to raise the importance of the sector, and increase engagement with high-growth marine business, and a member of the member of the Maritime UK steering group working on the Maritime Sector Deal.

Career Summary

Simon graduated with a BEng in Mechanical Engineering in 1995 and a PhD in 2000 from the University of Liverpool. After his PhD he worked as a structural analyst in the nuclear processing and defence industries (now Wood, 1998-2003). Simon has always worked at the industry/academia interface since joining the University of Southampton in 2003.

Simon is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) where he chairs their Structural Technology and Materials Group. He is past chairman of the British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM, 2012-14) and a former editorial board member of Strain (2003-15). He is also a member of the Institute of Physics (IoP) and Society for Experimental Mechanics (SEM).

 

Research interests

Simon’s PhD research used thermoelastic stress analysis (TSA) to determine the stress concentration factors (SCFs) from a variety of complex hole geometries in metallic flat plates and cylinders. This was extended to composite materials and pin-loaded holes through research funded by EPSRC. Simon’s other research interests include the industrial application of TSA to assess real engineering structures, developing TSA as a non-contact, non-destructive tool to assess residual stresses in metals, using pulsed phase thermography (PPT) to reveal defects in hybrid metal/polymer composite joints, consideration of manufacturing defects in the production of composite hulls and decks in the marine industry, and development of a novel composite cabin module for cruise liners and other ships. This work is funded from a variety of sources: EPSRC, Innovate UK (TSB), EDA and directly from industry. Simon has published more than 75 papers in archival journals and conference proceedings.
