I am Science Director at IT Innovation Centre, ECS and Theme Leader within the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute. 

I graduated with a PhD in theoretical particle physics from the University of Glasgow (1990). During my PhD, I contributed in the UK Grand Challenge for investigating on the structure and transitions of hadron matter at high densities, using intensive computing on vector machines at the University of Glasgow, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, IBM Rome and the University of San Diego, California, USA. I had various academic appointements in Computational Science at Strathclyde University, the University of Leeds and the University of Wupperthal (Germany). I also worked for 14 years at BMT Group Limited as Head of Research, where I developed the next generation of environmental information systems for the UK Oil and Gas Industry and the UK Goverment. I joined the University of Southampton, IT Innovation Centre in 2009 and have been conducting my research on big data, machine learning and high level data fusion and reasoning. Currently, I am particularly investigating on crowd behaviour detection using computer vision and concepts of fluid flow dynamics and statistical mechanics. I am PI of several research projects concerning big data, humans unusual behaviour detection and also intelligent surveillance of large scale critical infrastructure.

Research interests

My research interests are in Big Data analytics, machine learning, intelligent data and information processing, multimodal high level data fusion and reasoning, knowledge extraction for critical decision-support. Application domains include environment, security, health, crowd behaviour.

Investigation of Wave Impacts on Porous Structures for Coastal Defences

There is scientific interest in understanding the underlying wave impact dynamics on solid and/or permeable/Impermebale structures for coastal defences. The accurate and validated simulation of the dynamics of the flow prior to, at and after impact has been an outstanding and challenging numerical problem in CFD.
