SMMI Early Career Research Fellows positions available

Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) is recruiting up to five Early Career Research Fellows to join the on-going multi-disciplinary research and education activities which capitalise on the University’s core academic strengths. SMMI was founded recently with substantial investment by the University of Southampton. It is the focus for the university’s coverage of academic disciplines of relevance and interest to the marine and maritime domains and spans disciplines across engineering, humanities, medicine, sciences and social sciences.

Candidates must have a PhD at the time of appointment and a proven ability to publish innovative, high-quality research. Emphasis will be placed on the track record of publications and grant capture commensurate to career stage and your ability to develop a dynamic, externally funded research programme with an international profile. We welcome applications to pursue fundamental research and/or applied research and closer links with industry. A desire to engage in doctoral student supervision by capitalizing on the opportunities presented by graduate school opportunities in the host departments is expected in successful candidates.

Funding is available for up to four years; successful review after about three years offers the opportunity of faculty appointment. Fellowships will be appointed in the following theme areas:

Climate and environment- our interests range from understanding of the basic sciences influencing behaviour of the oceans, to the life within its environments.
Energy and resources- our interests range from understanding of the basic sciences influencing the search for such resources, the technology for managing and extracting them and the legal instruments for exploiting such resources.
Society and government- our interests and expertise in this domain include evolution of port cities, the planning of governance and planning in coastal regions owing to climate change patterns, technological innovations in ensuring safety of people and tourism and leisure activities.
Trade and transport- Our work encompasses technological aspects, working towards safe shipping and ship designs, legal instruments governing commercial and seabed management, logistics and supply chain management and the underlying impact of the maritime trade driven economics on the nation states´ welfare.
