The human element

Published: 14 November 2012

The Marine and Coastguard Agency not only implements the government's maritime safety policy in the UK, working to prevent the loss of life on the coast and at sea, but also carries out research in environmental protection, accident prevention, and safety around navigation, seafarers and vessels. Safety and human behaviour, with all its strengths and fallibilities, provides non-optional challenges for all levels of the maritime industry.

The MCA's Human Element Advisory Group draws together a wide range of UK organisations with an interest in human element matters to obtain their view and opinions. We were delighted to host a group of over sixty delegates for a day on campus, highlighting the work of the SMMI with particular emphasis on our expertise in the areas of human element, crew performance and safety.
