SMMI welcomes new Editor-in-Residence

Catherine Beswick joins the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) this week, taking up the role of Editor-in-Residence.

In this newly formed role, Catherine will lead on communications for the SMMI, supporting its vision to become the world’s leading institute for marine and maritime research, innovation and education.

In consultation with SMMI members and partners, Catherine will write, commission and edit articles for dissemination to our stakeholders through a variety of channels – with a focus on the work, the impact and the people. She will also contribute to other communications activities, such as outreach, social media campaigns and promoting SMMI both nationally and internationally.

In the coming weeks and months, Catherine hopes to engage with the SMMI community and explore the wealth of marine and maritime activities from across the University of Southampton.

Catherine’s normal working days will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. She will have a presence at the University’s Waterfront Campus (room 186/04, most Mondays), as well as at the recently opened Boldrewood Campus. Catherine is an experienced science writer. She holds a degree in Earth Sciences from the University of Oxford, an MSc in Oceanography from the University of Southampton, and a further postgraduate qualification in Science Communication. Throughout her career, she has gained extensive experience researching and writing about marine science and engineering, as well as environmental policy and socio-economic impact.
