Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholarship Projects - Advertising January 2017
The Leverhulme Trust has awarded the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute 15 fully-funded PhD grants, with the third group of five scholars to commence in October 2017.
SMMI Understanding Maritime Futures Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholars will address key global issues such as access to resources, safety and security, the effects of rising sea levels, technical advancements and autonomy, our responses to natural and human disasters, the impacts on people, and the ways people living by and from the sea understand their experiences and cultural heritage. The programme aims to facilitate a different, more creative and holistic way of problem solving to address marine and maritime societal challenges.
You will join a dynamic cohort of high calibre students addressing the key global issues identified, and work as part of a team with world leading academics.
Scholarships will be funded for 3 years and include full-time UK/EU fees.
The following projects will be advertised in the New Year:
1. Assessing the impact of hydrodynamic loads on shoulder joint injuries in swimming
3. How will sea-level rise and extreme events affect our natural cultural heritage?
5. A multidisciplinary investigation into urban air pollution in a port city
7. Pathways, sources and sinks of microplastics in coastal systems
8. Neither Resident nor Expatriate: Seafaring Citizens and Deterritorialized Development
9. Performance based use and regulation of composite materials in the marine sector
10. Re-inspiring the genetic algorithm
11. Duty of Care against Cyber Attacks on ships
12. A study on the technical and economic feasibility of mining Manganese crusts
13. Analytics for risk and sisaster response in maritime environments
14. The use of Argo Floats to Detected Downed Aircraft
