BBC Radio's 'The Life Scientific'
Professor Jim Al-Khalili and Professor Rachel Mills

Professor Rachel Mills joined presenter Jim Al-Khalili to discuss her fascination for exploring the sea floor. Her conversation with Jim is wide ranging; she reflects on early influences, and experiences and on the huge progress in oceanography from the first Atlantic vent discovery just 33 years ago to the present day expeditions, through to the future of the seas.

Rachel is the Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Environmental Sciences, is an ocean chemist who studies the deep floor and its impact on the whole ocean.  She is particularly interested in hot vents and the way the vents form, change over time and are dispersed into the deep ocean.

Earlier this year, she joined a group of researchers from the Universities of Southampton and Liverpool aboard the Royal Research Ship (RRS) James Cook on an expedition to sample the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

The programme is available online via the BBC iPlayer.  Please note, you will need a valid TV License to use BBC iPlayer, and programs will only be available to watch for a limited time.
