Launch of Maritime 2050

SMMI's Deputy Director, Prof Susan Gourvenec attended the launch of Maritime 2050 - Navigating the Future, the UK Government's first long-term strategy for the future of the British maritime sector at the International Maritime Organisation on 24th January 2019. The Minister for Maritime Nusrat Ghani, Secretary of State for Transport Chris Grayling and Chair and Vice-Chair of Maritime UK Harry Theochari and Sarah Kenny all spoke of the critical role of maritime to the UK and its future prosperity.

The Maritime 2050 strategy highlights that the UK’s position as a significant maritime power “is not static or stable and while the country solidified its maritime power over centuries, others have quickly risen to capitalise on geographic location or the ability to compete on price and incentives. Taking the right action now means the UK is well-placed to take a leading role in the new global maritime industry.” and that “the use of data and digitalisation will shape the future of the sector which is why technology is at the heart of this strategy.”. It clearly recognises that “fundamental to our success is our maritime people, their education and training with world-class universities and institutes providing top-level training for people within the maritime industry.”

Prof Susan Gourvenec will be discussing "Delivering the Government’s Maritime 2050 Strategy – the vision for science and innovation" at a panel event organised by the Foundation for Science and Technology at the Royal Society in March.
