Leaders across the University of Southampton, including Mark Spearing, VP Research and Enterprise and acting VC, Dame Wendy Hall, Regius Professor of Computer Science and an Executive Director of the Web Science Institute and Susan Gourvenec, Deputy Director of the SMMI and Professor of Offshore Geotechnical Engineering were invited by Councillor Christopher Hammond, Leader of Southampton City Council, to participate in the Southampton City Council’s Maritime Leaders’ Summit.

The SMMI proposed focus and investment to transform Southampton into an “Electric and Autonomous City”, creating a magnet for investment in the city, building on strengths of the University, and making Southampton a model “clean” and “green” port for international collaborators and competitors to follow; and to consolidate Southampton’s role as a Global Centre for Maritime Training, drawing together the expertise across the University of Southampton, NOCS, Solent University, Warsash Maritime Academy, Southampton City College, the Royal Navy and Lloyd’s Register, there is an impressive array of expertise in the ship –shipping – ports – transport arena.

The SMMI and the University Leadership will continue to engage with the City Council as the action plan to take forward a shared vision for Southampton as a leading maritime centre is developed.
