A series of events were held on 4 and 5 April to mark the significant milestone of 50 years of ship science education in the University. The discipline of ship science was established in the academic year 1968-69 with the appointment of the late Professor Geoff Goodrich as the first Professor of Ship Science. The first batch of students comprised five people reading towards a BSc in Ship Science and four in Nautical Studies. This has grown over the years to a current cohort of 114 students on BEng and MEng degrees, 43 students on MSc programmes and 35 students studying towards their PhD and EngD degrees.

The purpose of the gathering on 4 and 5 April was: (i) to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our distinguished alumni towards the betterment of our maritime engineering industries and for the societies we live in; and (ii) to look ahead at the challenges facing the ship science community and opportunities available to them in the coming decade/s.

Over 200 alumni from every decade since the 1970s, current staff and students and a few invited guests attended an International Conference on the Future of the Maritime Industry.  Apart from sharing thoughts about the shape of ship science education and the profession in the next few decades there were also celebrations of the many successes and accomplishments of the alumni.
