The programme for this year’s Lectures at the Nuffield Theatre, University of Southampton on Wednesday 16 October is now finalised.

The lectures aim to inspire young people working in or studying for the UK leisure marine industry and to highlight our unique international position as leaders in design and technology. There are currently some 4,800 businesses and 33,000 employees generating £3.2 billion in revenue and overseas sales that grew 16% in 2017/18, which means everyone involved is a major contributor to the UK economy.

SMMI and the University of Southampton are delighted to support the Shipwrights Lectures which are seen as part of the overall educational programme.

The first speaker, Bob Sanguinetti, CEO, UK Chamber of Shipping will evidence the importance of the ‘Leisure’ sector to the UK economy and the part contributed by apprentices and young boat builders.

Next up will be Steve Hancock, Training Manager, Pendennis Shipyard, also a Manager who has progressed from his apprenticeship into the Company’s leadership team, and will conduct a session discussing career progression with second and fourth year apprentices.

This will be followed by Nigel Stuart, Managing Director of Spirit Yachts who will outline the concept and background to their ‘Spirit 111’ that has been designed and built for sustainable sailing.

The Panel, again under the Chairmanship of Matt Sheahan - writer, producer and broadcaster - will focus on ‘Sports boats & Superyacht tenders’, a sector where the UK is a world leader. Matt will be joined by MD’s of some renowned companies together with Charlotte Mille, the Project Manager for the Monaco Solar & Energy Boat Challenge who will add a slightly different dimension to the discussions.

Further speakers will be announced in September but the closing session will include the 2018 winners of the prestigious 2018 Queen’s Silver Medal Award who have been invited to talk about their participation in the course and its career benefits.

Registration is now open, for registration visit the Shipwright Lectures Company attendees application form.
