SMMI at London International Shipping Week

SMMI attended a variety of events at London International Shipping Week 2019 (LISW19) which took place 9-13 September. Featuring 140 events, LISW19 attracted major players and leaders from the global shipping and related industries.

A Regional Spotlight highlighting the strong maritime regions in the UK, took place on the afternoon of 9 September at the Leadenhall Building, which included the soft launch of Maritime UK Solent.  SMMI Director, Professor Damon Teagle, was a speaker at this event, and highlighted the strength of the region and its ability to tackle the major challenges facing the industry through world class research, education and training, world leading industries and innovators and forward looking local Government and HMG agencies. Other speakers were Brian Johnson, BAE Systems, Alistair Welch, ABP Southampton, and Mike Sellars, Portsmouth International Port.

On the evening of 10 September a joint HMG/Maritime UK Reception was held at Banqueting House, to welcome international guests to LISW19 and provide an opportunity to showcase the UK as a world leading maritime nation.  Speakers included The Princess Royal, Grant Shapps (Secretary of State for Transport), Nusrat Ghani (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State with responsibility for maritime), and Maritime UK Chairman Harry Theochari.  SMMI’s Professor Damon Teagle and Dr Jon Downes were invited, together with around 500 guests from across the global maritime sector.

SMMI also had an exhibition stand on board RFA Lyme Bay, Greenwich Pier, to highlight the University’s capabilities in Marine and Maritime, and in particular those in Maritime Robotics. This event took place on 11 September and was attended by Professors Damon Teagle, Stephen Turnock, Simon Quinn.
