SMMI was one of 10 international organisations to feature in a film Our Oceans: Our Future, co-produced by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and ITN Productions. The hour-long film draws attention to the challenges facing the ocean and showcases stories of science, innovation and sustainability that are transforming the marine sector.

The feature highlights the additionality SMMI derives from the multi-disciplinarity of research capability and collaborations with external partners in addressing the grand challenges facing our oceans.

The feature also focusses on the University of Southampton’s leading position in harnessing big data and machine learning to create innovative and practical solutions which address the challenges of the ocean environment.

SMMI members Associate Professors Gabe Weymouth, Adam Sobey and Blair Thornton showcased new methods for collecting, processing and interpreting huge amounts of data about the oceans that they are leading development of at the University of Southampton and LR’s Technical Director Tim Kent discussed the impacts of the research outcomes in industry.

The film was launched at an evening event following the IMarEST conference Oceans of Knowledge, hosted at the Royal Institution in London on 20 November. The theme of the conference series this year was Ocean Observations and Emerging Technologies Enabling the Blue Economy.
