The World Ocean Initiative ran the Women and the ocean: Changemakers challenge between 15 November 2019 and 20 January 2020. This competition, sponsored by The Nature Conservancy, aims to showcase leading female changemakers working to develop business solutions to achieve ocean-related sustainability. The goal is to ensure that women are visible across the ocean supply chain and that their contribution is recognised and elevated.

SMMI member and  Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Ocean and Earth Science, Dr Katie St John Glew was one of three winners with her idea of an innovative solution ‘Verifying fish catch locations and improving traceability’.

Katie and the two other winners, Olga Lucia Caro Jacome (Colombia) and Dr Ling Ka Yi (Singapore) have been invited to present their vision for a blue economy at the World Ocean Summit in Tokyo, Japan on 9-10 March 2020.

To help bring the changemakers’ ideas to life, they will receive guidance from renowned female ocean leaders as part of a 12-month mentorship programme that will begin shortly before the summit.  Katie will be mentored by Maria Damanaki, global ambassador for oceans, The Nature Conservancy.
