IROE Chair, Susan Gourvenec, in conversation with Professor Raffaella Ocone OBE FREng FRSE, on Safer End of Engineered Life

Academy Cafe

IROE Chair, Susan Gourvenec, talked with Professor Raffaella Ocone about the EngineeringX Safer End of Engineering Life Programme, a global collaboration founded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and Lloyd’s Register Foundation. Susan is a member of the Programme Board and Leader of the initial theme of Safer Decommissioning of Offshore Structures and Ships.

The Safer End of Engineering Life Programme seeks to reduce the number of incidents, accidents and casualties that occur as a result of safety issues, as well as addressing the environmental impact, of poor management of waste. The first challenge addressed by the programme was Safer Decommissioning of Offshore Structures and Ships, with subsequent initiatives commissioning a Global Review on Safer End of Engineered Life and a follow on programme of activities to explore unregulated Burning of Waste. A Call for Champions for future initiatives is due to be announced in March 2021.
