Historian, Dr Sam Robinson, has recently been appointed as an SMMI Research Fellow. Sam joins SMMI from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge.

Best known as a historian of ocean sciences, Sam is the author of a book on the history of National Institute of Oceanography during the Cold War (Ocean Science and the British Cold War State, Palgrave, 2018), and is Vice-President of the International Commission for the History of Oceanography.

Since 2019 he has also been active in the EU Horizon 2020 project InsSciDE studying the historical development and contemporary potentiality of science diplomacy for Europe and the wider world in tackling future environmental challenges.

At Southampton Sam will be continuing this work as part of a new ERC project on the history of global scientific data sharing with colleagues at the University of Manchester and project partners in China and Brazil. He will also be completing work on a second book project concerned with the historical role of science and technology in the construction of regimes of global ocean governance in the 20th century.

Sam joins SMMI in September.
