Event details

We will be holding a one-day cultural event on Saturday 13th October consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within the History at Southampton. This thought provoking and inspiring conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about the Tudors from academics of international distinction.

This study day will offer five papers presenting new research on the Tudors. The papers in the morning will focus on high politics at court and in the capital while the papers in the afternoon will consider life in Southampton. As this study day forms part of the Southampton Revels programme we are very pleased to have Dr Cheryl Butler, the leading light in the Revels events, joining us.

Programme

  • Professor George Bernard - ‘Henry VIII: Reflections on The King's Reformation'
  • Dr Peter Clarke - ‘Rivalling Rome: Cardinal Wolsey and Papal Dispensations'
  • Professor Maria Hayward - ‘Dressed for the block'
  • Dr Cheryl Butler (Head of Culture, Eastleigh Borough Council) ‘Defence of the Realm: callivers, brown bills & gunpowder: Southampton's response to the threat of war in the sixteenth century'
