Event details

August-September 2018 marks the 50th Anniversary of Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 1 that drilled 7 sites in the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean – beginning 5 decades of international co-operation in scientific ocean drilling.

The University of Southampton, NOC and forerunner institutions (NOCS, SOC, IoS) have long standing engagements in scientific ocean drilling from the earliest days of UK involvement, and our involvement in and leadership of IODP increases year on year.

To celebrate Southampton’s involvement in scientific ocean drilling we will host an afternoon of talks, posters and drinks, followed by dinner at a local restaurant.

The invited keynote speakers will involve reminiscences from the heroic years of DSDP and ODP, from Bob Whitmarsh, Norman Hamilton, Alan Kemp, Sir Antony Laughton FRS and others, right up to the latest drilling results, including:

- Special Guest speaker and Southampton Alumna, Prof. Jo Morgan - (Imperial) ‘Impacts, the Chicxulub crater and the death of the Dinosaurs’

- Prof. Lisa McNeill - (Southampton) ‘Drilling in subduction zones and rifts’

- Prof. Steve Roberts - (Southampton) ‘Brothers Arc hydrothermal vents’.

We welcome all Southampton past, present and future ocean drillers to join us for this celebration of what is arguably the most successful, enduring multinational science collaboration.
