Jantsje van Loon: “Dutch Delta Program Wadden region: In search for green and robust flood protection along the Wadden Sea coast”

These seminars illustrate the breadth of coastal studies at the University of Southampton. Traditionally, this seminar series is held at Highfield, hosted by the faculty of Engineering and the Environment and will aim to showcase areas of research within the coastal research theme at Ocean and Earth Science.

Jantsje van Loon will present some results of the Delta Program Wadden region studies on innovative flood defences along the Dutch Wadden Sea coast. Especially about a case study where in close collaboration with local water boards, the most promising dike concepts were identified for all dike trajectories along the Wadden Sea coast. In areas with natural or semi-natural salt marshes, or with favourable abiotic boundary conditions for (stimulated) salt marsh formation, the integration of salt marshes with the flood defence is a promising strategy. Also a broad green dike forms an interesting concept for further exploration.
