SMMI-LR Seminar Series 2015

Coffin ships, Titanic, Torrey Canyon, Exxon Valdez, Herald of Free Enterprise, 9/11, Costa Concordia, Norman Atlantic – Shipping regulations come about for a variety of reasons; usually to stop something undesirable happening, or happening again. This presentation will look back over the historical development of some major international shipping legislation, describe the modern day process of regulatory development, outline the evolution of Classification Societies and describe their role in the development and application of these regulations.

Speaker information

Sam James, Lloyd's Register Marine. Sam James is the Head of External Affairs (EA) which is part of the Southampton-based Technical Directorate. EA devises and executes LR policy with national governments, class societies, industry associations, standard-setting bodies and other major maritime and safety organisations. Sam was previously Manager of the Statutory Support Group in Fleet Services and Global Head of Fire and Safety. In his current post, he continues his statutory technology leadership.
