The Institute of Maritime Law
The Institute of Maritime Law was founded in 1982 to give focus to an existing interest in maritime and international trade law as these subjects had been an important feature of law at Southampton for some ten years.
The Institute is now composed of some sixteen Members and has established an international reputation. Although part of the School of Law, the Institute is privately funded. It meets its costs from earned income and from sponsorship.
The Institute maintains a fully staffed office and employs Research Assistants to assist with Institute projects. It maintains the specialised Philippa Kaye Library which contains a wide range of maritime law materials. Close connections are maintained with leading maritime lawyers, academics, maritime law associations and international organisation based all over the world. These include IMO, BMLA, IOPC, UNCITRAL, CMI as well as maritime law research centres at Oslo, Tulane, Rotterdam, and Hamburg to name but a few.
The Institute runs a large variety of courses and seminars, undertakes consultancy on all aspects of maritime and shipping law and has been commissioned by a large variety of bodies, associations, corporations and law firms to advise on UK, foreign, public international and convention law
The Institute of Maritime Law houses the specialist Philippa Kaye law library, a unique and comprehensive resource available to visiting scholars and maritime specialists. Leading academics from around the globe, practitioners from the City and post-graduates in maritime law are regular visitors. A reading room is also available, containing over 40 journal titles on regular subscription and a substantial amount of IMO and UNCTAD documentation.

Archive of bills of lading and charterparties
40 Journal titles on regular subscriptions
19 looseleaf titles including 4 USA titles
We hold the most current editions of major practitioner works including Arnould’s Law of Marine Insurance and Average; Benjamin’s Sale of Goods; Chitty on Contracts; Colinvaux and Merkin’s Insurance Contract Law (looseleaf); Carver on Bills of Lading; Dicey, Morris and Collins on The Conflict of Laws; Marsden: Collisions at Sea; Shawcross and Beaumont: Air Law; Time Charters; and, Voyage Charters.
Our Journals collection contains a wealth of domestic and international papers, with titles including Lloyd’s Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly; Journal of International Maritime Law; Journal of Business Law; International and Comparative Law Quarterly; Journal of Maritime Law and Commerce and Lloyd’s Maritime Law Newsletter.
In addition, the library boasts a complete collection of Lloyd’s Law Reports and American Maritime Law Cases. Other collections consist of Lloyd’s Law Reports Insurance & Reinsurance, The Times Law Reports, Commercial Cases, and Aspinall’s Reports of Maritime Cases.
Although not a lending library, visitors can apply for extended access to the materials and private, long term study offices can be arranged. Please contact the Institute Secretary for further information.
