Hi, I'm Holli Shelley-Fraser and I studied BSc Applied Social Sciences (Criminology and Psychological Studies) within Social Sciences: Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology at the University of Southampton.

The University of Southampton offered the combination of Criminology with Psychology, which many other universities did not.

Q: Why did you choose to study at the University of Southampton?

I expressed my interest in studying Criminology while in sixth form and my careers advisor recommended the University of Southampton. I undertook my studies here as I was aware of the excellent research and was impressed by the ratings in educational supplements. Southampton also offered the combination of Criminology with Psychology, which many other universities did not.

Q: How did you find studying Applied Social Sciences here?

I feel that there is a close interaction with the lecturers, ensuring a comfortable and relaxed environment, which in turn increases willingness to confidently ask for guidance if needed. The frequent seminars also enable further rapport to be built, and support and assistance is always available, which means that any previous misunderstandings can be addressed.

I would recommend Criminology and Psychological Studies, and all the Applied Social Sciences courses, to future students, as studying them gives you an insight into the world from a multitude of perspectives.

Researching many of the issues in the course prepares you to be critical of what is often documented in the news or in statistics. It also teaches you to delve further in an attempt to find ulterior explanations for many common occurrences in society.

I would specifically recommend the University to future students as it has enabled me to learn in a renowned Russell Group university while benefiting from friendly and warm surroundings.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

I intend to apply for graduate schemes with either the police service or government organisations in the criminological field.
