Hi, I'm Kerri Cairns and I studied BSc Sociology within Social Sciences: Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology at the University of Southampton.

It was possible to pick from a range of option modules from Criminology, Anthropology, Politics and Social Work, which allowed me to gain an insight into other areas, not just straight Sociology.

Q: Why did you choose the University of Southampton?

I chose the University of Southampton after visiting an open day and falling in love with the campus. It has fantastic facilities, including the extensive library and IT access across campus, which contributed to it being my first choice. Also, the University's reputation in terms of league tables, research and employment opportunities really does speak for itself!

Q: Why did you choose to study Sociology?

I chose Sociology as, when studying at A level, I developed a huge interest in the subject. I felt that it would be a fantastic degree choice because it covered such a wide range of interesting issues. Also, with the course at Southampton, it was possible to pick from a range of option modules from Criminology, Anthropology, Politics and Social Work, which allowed me to gain an insight into other areas, not just straight Sociology. Lastly, I wasn't completely sure what career path I wanted to take and with a Sociology degree it is possible to move on to many different types of career.

Q: How did you find the student life in Southampton?

Student life in Southampton is great. Just on campus, there is a pub, a nightclub, student shop, cinema and theatre! With many different cheap clubs and bars and West Quay being just a bus ride away, what more could you want?

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

My career aim is to become a primary school teacher and therefore I am continuing my studies at the University of Southampton doing a PGCE in Primary Education.
