Tom Lawrence BSc Sociology, 2011
Teaching Assistant
Hi, I'm Tom Lawrence and I studied BSc Sociology within Social Sciences: Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology at the University of Southampton.
The variety of different modules to choose from ensured that I studied a diverse range of topics.
Q: Why did you choose Southampton?
I chose Southampton mainly because of a gut feeling that I got when I visited on an open day. The halls, the city and the university itself really were everything I was looking for in a university, and the students I talked to on the open day were very complimentary about the university as well. When it came to the final decision, it really didn't take much thinking to decide that I wanted to choose Southampton.
Q: Why Sociology?
I took Sociology at A level and wanted to continue studying the subject at university. I enjoyed my studies at Southampton, with the majority of lectures being very interesting and enjoyable. The variety of different modules to choose from ensured that I studied a diverse range of topics.
Q: How did you find student life in Southampton?
The student life in Southampton is brilliant. There were always things to do from the moment I arrived. Sobar and Jesters became frequent venues for nights out, with other bars in Portswood and Bedford Place giving a variety of locations to visit. There were also a large number of clubs and societies to join, resulting in a lot of socials taking place as well as a fair few trips/tours. The Archers Road FC tour to Prague will live long in the memory.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
As a result of studying at Southampton, I have been able to get a teaching assistant job at James Dixon Primary School in Anerley, south-east London. The plan is to do a GTP at the school next year and then hopefully begin a career in teaching.
