Charity – is it always a good thing?
Many years ago, John Stuart Mill argued that 'charity lavishes its bounty in one place, and leaves people to starve in another'.
Working through an ESRC-funded research centre on charitable giving and philanthropy,
Professor John Mohan
will direct a series of projects on the distribution of charitable organisations and charitable resources.
It will explore some of the implications of Mill's statement - for example, how does the distribution of registered charities relate to the patterns of prosperity and deprivation in different parts of the country?
