Sociology seminar
This talk will involve a discussion about some doctoral research findings, which explored radicalisation in the UK. There will be a particular focus upon certain under researched elements of radicalisation, which can lead towards violent extremism, such as the value of culture and subculture. There will also be an emphasis on how adopting a multi-disciplinary approach enabled an understanding of the topic in a way not previously considered. The issues discussed will be underpinned using qualitative empirical data collected during the doctoral research.
Speaker information
Dr Suraj Lakhani, University of Sussex. Suraj currently works as Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology at the University of Sussex. Prior to this, he completed his doctorate at Cardiff University where his research empirically analysed how certain young British Muslim men become radicalised towards the internalisation of both non-violent and violent ideologies. During this time he was also employed as Researcher for the Universities' Police Science Institute and lectured at the School of Social Sciences. Other academic achievements include an MSc in Risk and Security Management from the University of Southampton. Prior to his doctorate, Suraj worked as Researcher for the National Security and Resilience Department within the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies, a think-tank based in Whitehall, London.
