Katie Bruce BSc Applied Social Sciences (Criminology), MSc Sociology, Mphil/PhD Sociology & Social policy, 2012
Researcher for the Third Sector Research Centre
Hi, I'm Katie Bruce and I studied BSc Applied Social Sciences (Criminology), MSc Sociology, Mphil/PhD Sociology & Social policy within Social Sciences: Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology at the University of Southampton.
I’ve absolutely loved my time here, I’ve made some great friends, it’s a brilliant campus, had brilliant supervision support from all the academic team and now I guess I’ve become one of them!
What have you studied?
I started here in , right back in 2003 so I did my undergraduate degree in criminology, then I did my masters in sociology and I was lucky enough to get a scholarship to do my PhD, carried on here as well so I’ve been here for almost 9 years so long time student.
And what was your research on?
It was about the role of tradition and family relationships in weddings and civil partnerships ceremonies. Basically it found that these relationships are hugely significant in the adoption of tradition, by straight couples and also gay couples as well so I’ve done some theoretical contributions to things around reflexivity.
How have you found your time here?
I’ve absolutely loved my time here, I’ve made some great friends, it’s a brilliant campus, had brilliant supervision support from all the academic team and now I guess I’ve become one of them! I’m a researcher for the third sector research centre within the departments so that’s been great as well.
I think the social side as well, over the years I’ve been a member and I used to run the contemporary dance society and been part of the squash society , there’s a great social aspect to Southampton as well and I’ve made lots of friends so it’s been a really really good experience.
