Hi, I'm Jennifer Warren and I studied BSc Criminology within Social Sciences: Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology at the University of Southampton.

I absolutely loved undertaking the dissertation project in final year; I researched agricultural crime and spent time driving around the countryside interviewing farmers about their experiences of crime.

Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies in Criminology at the University of Southampton?

I decided to study Criminology after developing a keen interest in the social aspect of crime whilst I was at college. I used to spend a lot of my spare time watching cases at Winchester Crown Court and I was interested in why some people commit crime, yet others do not, so the Criminology course really appealed to me. I was especially drawn to the flexibility of the course, I loved the idea of choosing from such a diverse range of modules and I have enjoyed studying subjects that interest me, alongside my core modules - I have studied child psychology, American politics, Classical Political Theory, and how Musical Instruments Work, amongst other things.

Q: What do you enjoy about studying Criminology at Southampton?

The teaching team are incredible and lectures are brilliant! Seminars are lively and the opportunity to have discussions and debates with my peers and lecturers is wonderful. The resources available are second to none - the library is brilliantly stocked and the staff are really helpful. The range of societies on offer is also really diverse and I’ve enjoyed getting involved with different activities and meeting new people. Societies also provide the opportunity to develop skills for the workplace and committee positions are especially helpful for this; I’ve really enjoyed being the Treasurer of the Catholic Society during my final year.

Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?

One of the best things that I have taken away from studying at Southampton is a love of learning and a desire to find out more about things. I absolutely loved undertaking the dissertation project in final year; I researched agricultural crime and spent time driving around the countryside interviewing farmers about their experiences of crime, I’m now determined to carry on reading around the subject and I’m hoping to complete a Masters and PhD at Southampton in the near future.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

At the moment I am working for the Liberal Democrats as the Constituency Organiser for the Romsey constituency ahead of the next General Election; I also work for the National Trust at Mottisfont near Stockbridge. I’m getting married next August (I met my fiancé at University - he studied Geography and graduated last summer), but I’m hoping to return to Southampton for further study within the next five years.

Q: Any other comments

The campus at Southampton is great - there are always loads of things going on around campus, especially around the Student’s Union, and I love all the green spaces. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to study at a Russell Group university; to have a 2:1 BSc from a Russell Group university defuses my fears about finding a job in the future.
