One of my Southampton highlights would be my opportunity to study abroad in America for one Semester during my final year. I learnt so much about myself and I was able to study my course under a whole new educational system as well as undertake new modules.

Why did you choose to come and study at Southampton?

I considered Southampton as one of my University options because it is part of the Russel Group, it was outside London and it also offered the course I wanted to study. After visiting my other potential choices and lastly, attending an open day at the University of Southampton, as soon as I reached the campus, I remember looking at my friend and saying, “this is it”. Southampton has all the advantages of being a town/city university without being in the centre of the city. Being someone who comes from London, this was the perfect place to settle in without being too homesick because for me, it was almost like a micro version of London.

What is it like studying here?

Studying at Southampton was very pleasant. I grew mentally, emotionally and academically.

The most important thing that contributed to my positive experience in Southampton was the course. The modules within the course maintained me entertained and motivated as well as contributing to my decision as to what field of work I wanted to go in within Criminology. There was great flexibility in also exploring modules outside of my course area. Crime was not a major issue compared to what I am used to in London and so, I always felt quite safe. A great thing about studying in Southampton was that there is always something going on around campus attracting all tastes and interests even during stressful times like exams which allow you to stay sane.

What have you enjoyed most about your course?

It was very interesting for me to go from learning and understanding the underpinning theoretical aspects of Sociology and Criminology all through to being given the opportunity to visit a prison as part of my module in my final year. I really felt like I was on a quest to better understand crime among society and individuals and how they correlate. It was also great, to have varying ways of being assessed as I was able to learn my strengths in different types of assessments.

What have been your Southampton ‘highlights’?

One of my Southampton highlights would be my opportunity to study abroad in America for one Semester during my final year. This experience was really one of the best things I have done in my entire life, an experience that can never be taken away. I learnt so much about myself and I was able to study my course under a whole new educational system as well as undertake new modules.

What opportunities has studying at Southampton provided you with?

Studying at Southampton has provided me with Internship opportunities, voluntary work, studying abroad and a graduate job.
