Holly White BSc Economics, 2012
Assistant Economist at Department for Business, Innovation and Skills

Hi, I'm Holly White and I studied BSc Economics within Social Sciences: Economics at the University of Southampton.
Everyone is so nice. I have really enjoyed my course, especially the development economics module which had great lecturers and led me on to my dissertation topic.
Q: Why did you choose to undertake your studies at the University of Southampton?
I loved the friendly atmosphere of Southampton both when I visited friends before I attended the University and during open days. I wanted to be at a university with great facilities for studying and extracurricular activities with many societies to get involved in. It is also very close to the main town with many shops and great nightlife.
Q: What do you enjoy about studying at Southampton?
Mostly the people! Everyone is so nice. I have really enjoyed my course, especially the Development Economics module which had great lecturers and led me on to my dissertation topic. It was interesting to be able to also study areas outside of Economics such as Demography and Sociology as part of my course. I am not really a sporty person, but having sports membership encouraged me to make use of the swimming pool and to take Pilates classes.
Q: What have you been able to achieve as a result of studying at the University of Southampton?
I completed the “Graduate Passport” (active citizen package) through my involvement in societies, work experience and attending careers events whilst at Southampton. This is an award which recognises extracurricular activities and development. I also helped set up the Belly Dance Society and was treasurer for 2 years. It was great to be able to do something not only as a hobby but that looks good on your CV! In addition, being treasurer of the Save the Children Society allowed me to develop my organisational skills by planning events to raise awareness and money for the charity which was very rewarding.
Q: What are your plans for the future?
Next, I am going to Suzhou, China to teach English at a summer school for 2 months. Then in the long run I hope to get a job in Economics or Finance as I particularly enjoyed the Finance modules on my course.
