Hi, I'm Hussain Razian and I studied BSc Economics within Social Sciences at the University of Southampton.
I was part of the university taekwondo club for my whole three years and in that time it developed to become like a new family. Without realising it societies train you to manage your time and develop a good work-life balance.
Why did you choose to undertake your studies at the University of Southampton?
The high research standard of the department meant that the staff were prestigious and some of the best around. I also liked the compact layout of the campus and its close proximity to the city centre which was only a short bus journey away.
Were there any particular aspects outside of your studies you enjoyed?
I was part of the university taekwondo club for my whole three years and in that time it developed to become like a new family. Without realising it societies train you to manage your time and develop a good work-life balance. I was the team captain which meant I had to deal with unexpected circumstances and make compromises but this prepared me for the workplace when things pop up all over the place.
What is your opinion on the support available for you from the academic staff and careers advisers?
Support has been great; I received regular emails as reminders of the careers office and their services. The academics themselves were also really good, particularly in the way they taught which provided a good balance between teaching and promoting self-study; I wasn’t just spoon-fed everything. However if you ever have any problems they are always really supportive.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m staying another year to do masters as I really enjoy it here and think another year will be helpful to my future career plans. I’m doing economics and econometrics because the university have some of the best econometricians in the world. This is a great opportunity which will help so much with economic analysis and could really shape me to work at a think tank in the future.
