Hi, I'm Laura Hyrjak and I studied BSc Applied Social Sciences (Criminology with Psychological Studies) within Social Sciences at the University of Southampton.

My experiences of working on a multi-disciplinary course gave me a great advantage when applying, and I have since managed to secure funding for the doctoral programme. I am looking forward to furthering my studies at Southampton and after this I hope to continue in the academic field.

Why did you choose to undertake your studies at the University of Southampton?

I decided to study Criminology and Psychological studies at Southampton as the course outline was unique, offering a much better variety of modules than many similar courses. As I was unsure about what area I wanted to focus on at the time, the chance to study from a wide range of disciplines felt like the perfect option for me.

What do you enjoy about studying at Southampton?

One of my favourite aspects of Southampton was that it was campus based, and I really enjoyed studying in this environment. I felt that by being on a campus, the University had a friendly, welcoming atmosphere which gave you real sense of belonging. I have also enjoyed the independence that the University offered and appreciated that the further I progressed the more I was able to study topics that I found particularly interesting.

What are your plans for the future?

The lecturers were always highly supportive and through the advice of my academic tutor I found out about the opportunity to study Web Science at a postgraduate level. My experiences of working on a multi-disciplinary course gave me a great advantage when applying, and I have since managed to secure funding for the doctoral programme. I am looking forward to furthering my studies at Southampton and after this I hope to continue in the academic field.
