Maria joined the Department of Economics as a Lecturer in September 2010 and received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Essex in 2011.
Maria’s main research interests lie in the field of econometrics focusing on spatial econometrics, simulation and data-driven methods, time-series analysis and applied econometrics. Through her current research agenda, Maria aims to develop and evaluate methodological novelties for the estimation, inference and prediction of socio-economic networks via the use of robust spatio-temporal econometric techniques. She is also interested in topics in empirical finance, particularly the use of simulation-based and machine learning methods for prediction. From 2017-2019 her research was funded by the Leverhulme Trust and the British Academy via the Small Research Grant scheme.
Maria is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice obtained from the University of Southampton in 2014. She is also an Editor for Cogent Mathematics & Statistics, acts as a reviewer in several high-impact academic journals and is an external examiner for the M.Phil. in Economics at the University of Cambridge (since 2019). Since 2019 she is actively involved in the Athena SWAN charter and currently serves as a member of the University of Southampton’s Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team for Academic & Research Staff.
