I am a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology.

My research interests are in behaviour change and public policy, particularly those behaviours and policies regarding the environment, energy, and transport.

Broadly, my research is concerned with the intersection of behaviour change, social norms and public policy, especially in the fields of energy, transport and sustainability. I’m particularly interested in social drivers for air travel; carbon offsetting and its critiques; and regulatory approaches to sustainable aviation.

Having worked as a Behavioural Insights researcher at Ofgem (the government regulator of the Energy industry) I am interested in behaviour change theories – including behavioural economics and social practice – and how these can be applied to different policy problems.

I am also interested in how cultural differences relate to public policy and social norms around sustainability, and how migration between countries like the China and UK might disrupt such norms. A recently-completed ESRC-funded fellowship explored these themes in detail.

My most recent research looks at the development of ‘smart’ sustainable cities and digitisation in urban transport and infrastructure.

Research interests

Sustainable consumption; behavioural public policy; ‘Nudge’; practice theory; environmental sociology; hypermobility and aviation.

I teach on the undergraduate course ‘SOCI1003: Social Problems & Social Policy’
