Stuart Smedley is a Research Fellow on the ESRC-funded Project ‘Social and Political Change in Britain: Gallup Polls 1945-1991’.

I joined the department of Politics and International Relations in April 2021. In my role, I am responsible for the conversion of historical British opinion polls conducted by Gallup between 1945 and 1991 into formats compatible with contemporary software.

My research focuses on historic British public opinion – in particular towards European integration. I am in the process of completing a PhD in Politics and Contemporary History at King’s College London, where I was the recipient of a Sir Richard Trainor PhD Scholarship. My thesis investigates developments in British public opinion towards European integration from 1973, the year of the United Kingdom’s accession to the European Economic Community, through to the June 2016 referendum vote to leave the European Union.

My other research interests are the broader historical relationship between the United Kingdom and the European Union, as well as other international organisations, British post-war foreign policy and the Cold War.

Prior to beginning my doctoral research, I worked for four years (2013-2017) as a quantitative researcher at Ipsos MORI, the well-known market research company.
