Dr Utsa Mukherjee is an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow within Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology at the University of Southampton. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Prior to joining the University of Southampton in 2020, he was an Associate Lecturer in Geography at Birkbeck University of London (2020), a Visiting Lecturer in Social Sciences at the University of Roehampton (2019), and a Seminar Tutor in Sociology at Royal Holloway University of London (2016-18). He has also worked as a PhD Tutor (2017-18) with the charity, The Brilliant Club. His disciplinary interests pan across sociology, human geography, and cultural studies and he has published in the areas of childhood studies, leisure studies, and postcolonial studies.

He received his PhD in Sociology from Royal Holloway University of London. His PhD research, funded by Royal Holloway Doctoral Scholarship, unpacked middle-class British Indian children's everyday leisurescapes and their underpinning parenting ideologies. Located at the intersection of childhood studies and leisure studies, his research draws focus on questions around social inequalities, children's everyday geographies and parenting cultures. During this ESRC funded Postdoctoral Fellowship, Utsa will be working on his first monograph provisionally titled Race, Class and Children's Leisure. He will also undertake engagement activities with British Indian community groups and leisure industry bodies.

Research interests

Utsa's research interests broadly centre around the following axes:

  • Sociology of childhood with a particular focus on generational order, parenting strategies, children's agency, materiality and child-animal relations.
  • Leisure and social inequalities
  • Race & ethnicity, racism and postcolonial studies

Utsa is a qualitative researcher and has, over the years, conducted research in the UK and in India. He is particularly interested in interview and participatory methods.
