Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Quota Awards in demography and social statistics

The Division of Social Statistics at the University of Southampton has an international reputation and research expertise in subjects from social statistics and sample survey methods to demography, statistical modelling and social policy. We were among the top social science departments in the country in the 2008 RAE review of research quality.

For 2009 entry, we have been awarded eight ESRC quota awards; four of the awards are in the field of demography, and four of the awards are in the field of social statistics. All awards are either for ‘1+3’ study or for ‘+3’ study.

The ESRC quota awards pay all University tuition fees, plus an annual maintenance stipend (set at £13,290 for the 2009-2010 academic year). In addition, both social statistics and demography awards can potentially qualify for an additional maintenance stipend of £3,000 per year for award-holders whose study or research involves advanced quantitative methods. Finally, each quota award includes a research support grant of up to £1,000 per year for each of the three years of MPhil/PhD study.
