Southampton Professors comment on welfare debate

Published: 28 March 2013Origin: Sociology, Social Policy and Criminology

Two Southampton Professors have recently appeared in the media, discussing plans to change the welfare system which will come into force next week.

In an interview with Meridian TV, Professor Bernard Harris explains that 'the argument that the Government has made is that the way that the welfare system currently operates, it doesn't provide a strong enough incentive to work, so one of the motives behind the Government's policies is the idea of changing the balance between work and welfare, so that work pays and work is a more attractive option’. However, as Professor Ros Edwards explains in an open letter to the Guardian, entitled 'Benefit cuts and rhetoric undermine a bastion of civilised society', the divisions are not so simple.
