Dr Lorraine Warren, Director of the Centre for Strategic Innovation, from the Southampton Management School and Dr Pathik Pathak from Social Sciences are hosting visitors from one of India’s leading universities this month.

Professor Rakesh Basant, who is interested in technology management and innovation issues, and his fellow academics from the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad will deliver a seminar in the Management School. They will also learn more about collaboration between universities and businesses and discuss how to support start-up companies through incubation units. Dr Warren and Dr Pathak already have links with academic colleagues in the sub continent.

“We hope this visit will help forge strong links between our two universities,” explains Lorraine. “IIM is extremely well-respected for the quality of its management education and we believe there is plenty of potential for joint research projects.”

The University of Southampton’s International Office has fostered the relationship with IIM following a visit by Vice-Chancellor Don Nutbeam to India in March 2013 as part of a delegation of leaders in education with Prime Minister David Cameron.

The University of Southampton has an innovative and entrepreneurial approach to research and runs a successful business incubation programme which supports high-tech, high-growth companies. It is part of SETsquared, a partnership with the Universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter and Surrey which has given birth to some 1,000 high-tech start-ups since its inception 10 years ago. In 2013 alone it has helped companies within its incubator raise £34m in investment funding. The University Business Incubator (UBI) Index has listed the SETsquared incubator as the best in Europe, alongside jointly-placed NDRC LaunchPad in the Republic of Ireland. It also ranked SETsquared as fourth in the world.
