From 9th May to 12th May 2022, the University of Southampton Faculty of Social Sciences (FSS) hosted a series of online sessions to engage with potential students.

These webinars focused on Education, Operational Research & Applied Statistics, and International Commercial and Corporate Law courses and ended with a NOVVA Technology India Connects University Fair.

The events were organised in response to the university’s recent successes during India Week, a week of themed events to strengthen UK-India relationships. The online sessions in May capitalised on the potential for students from India to attend Social Sciences courses at the University of Southampton, giving them the opportunity to meet academics, current students and university staff.

The aim of these webinars was to show what prospective students' future could look like with a degree in each of the courses at Southampton! Each event began with an introduction to Southampton and the university delivered by Miriam Gomez Lopez. Next each course was described as well as employability and career opportunities available to students by the representative speaker of the course.

This was followed by a presentation from each of the students about their experiences on the course and living in the UK and Southampton. The sessions concluded with a Q&A session.

The Education webinar featured Deputy Head of School (Education) Miranda Dodd, Associate Programme Director BSc Education Dr Alex Woodgate-Jones, Lecturer in Sociology of Education Dr Achala Gupta, Programme Director MSc Education Dr Ran Peleg, SUSU Academic President for Education & current BSc Education student Chloe Eddy and MSc Education graduate Mariia Samoilova as speakers.

Director of Internationalisation & Associate Professor in the School of Mathematical Sciences Dr Carlos Lobo and Associate Professor in Survey Methodology and Social Statistics, Postgraduate Taught Programme Coordinator (Statistics and Demography), Dr Olga Maslovskaya and MSc Applied Statistics student Oki Krisnadevi were speakers at the Operational Research & Applied Statistics webinar.

Speakers for the International Commercial and Corporate Law & Maritime Law webinar were Associate Professors in Law Dr Stephanie Law and Dr Alexandros Ntovas, LLM Martime Law students Simay Cilingir, Kleopatra Yfanti and current PhD Law student Jingzhong Chen.

Miriam Gomez Lopez said: It was lovely to talk to prospective students and have registrations from countries all around the globe, including India, Bahamas, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Hong Kong, Nigeria, Norway, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Zambia, Malawi, Saudi Arabia, Zimbabwe, China, Pakistan & Vietnam!

Thank you to all who attended the sessions and to the academics and students who spoke during the event!
