Mr Edward Last is Postgraduate research student within Politics & International Relations at the University of Southampton.

Qualifications

I graduated with a BSc in Politics and International Relations in 2006 and an MSc in Global Security in 2008, both from the University of Southampton before embarking on a PhD in 2009.

Research interests

My research interests are primarily in the fields of security and strategic studies. I am particularly interested in the role of ideology and culture in global politics and the concept of strategic culture, especially in relation to armed conflict, terrorism and political violence.

My current research focuses on the strategic cultures of violent non-state actors (VNSAs) with case studies on Al-Qaeda and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Previously I researched the relationship between Islamic militancy and American foreign policy in the Middle East for my undergraduate thesis; and for my Master’s thesis I employed the concept of strategic culture in order to understand the motivation behind Iran’s nuclear programme.

PhD research topic
Strategic culture and violent non-state actors
