Research interests

PhD research topic
Volunteering and civic engagement

Is volunteering a political activity? Robert Putnam’s assertion (Bowling Alone, 2000) that "volunteering is part of the syndrome of good citizenship and political involvement" (p132) is hugely appealing to policymakers. What if promoting volunteering could fix democracy? I am using a range of British longitudinal data to investigate the nature of volunteering and the extent to which it can be considered to be part of a spectrum of political and civic engagement. My studies are funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
