It's important to keep your promises, but this isn't the whole story: some promises should not have been made in the first place. We should not make either insincere promises or 'wicked' promises. But likewise we should not make reckless promises, promises we are not competent to keep. I explore this notion of recklessness, and briefly discuss why promise-making is governed by such norms. I then argue that assertion involves promising to speak truthfully, and show how we can derive norms of assertion from norms on promise-making.
