Magna Carta, British Values and Religious Minorities
It is 800 years since the Magna Carta. With an election campaign that may focus on immigration, as well as anxieties about British identity and religious difference, Professor Malik will argue that Magna Carta should be taught in schools but it should be presented as a shield to protect minorities rather than a stick that is used by majorities to re-inforce their national identity. She will discuss the campaign that preceded the Jew Bill of 1753 during which the Magna Carta was a symbol of Englishness that excluded Jews.
